A BRIEF HISTORY SUMMARY
The first known registration of habitation is dated between years 11,000 and year 600 b.C. on the Paleolithic era. The first period of this era to appear was the Jōmon period. The main characteristics of this period was the emergence of the pottery that brought also agriculture.
The Jōmon was followed by the Yayoi period (500 b.C.- 300 a.C.) and it introduced metallurgy and rice cultivation. Then the Kofun period came (III century- VII century). In the Kofun period Japan began creating links with China and Corea. This period brought also the end of prehistoric era in Japan.
Economic history of Japan officially began when the first contacts of Japan with Europe started, in the 16th century. At that time Japan had a closed economy with China (they couldn’t import neither silk or porcelain) that made Portugal act as an intermediary between both countries.
In the Edo period (1603-1868) those relations intensified. When in 1650 a civil war in China (the main porcelain producer) started, Japan became the main porcelain exporter and and economic development began.
